 From the Preface

Three Centuries of Spanish Short Stories: Literary Selections and Activities for the Student of Spanish is a textbook designed for college students of Spanish at the fifth-semester or higher level. This textbook can be used for a 300 level literature course or for a special topics course. Its goal is to introduce students to a variety of Spanish short stories produced from 1800 to the present day. Its aim is to strengthen students’ reading, speaking and writing skills.

Three Centuries of Spanish Short Stories includes short stories of a great thematic variety, a characteristic of the modern Spanish short story. Students will read short fiction that deals with themes as varied as hardship of children and adolescents, stories of immigrants in Spain, woman’s roles in society, fantastic fiction, folktales, disabilities, "fall in love" and "fall out of love."

Pedagogical approach

  • The pedagogical philosophy is interactive. Students are invited to use what they know and to find out about what they don’t know. Dialogue, self-awareness, critical thinking as well as cultural comparisons are fostered.

  • This is a classroom textbook with flexible activities—that is, activities for the individual as well as for the group; involving both dialogue and writing. This facilitates different types of class dynamics according to the instructor’s goals.

  • The approach is multidisciplinary—that is, though the main content deals with literature, texts are used to uncover historical, cultural and sociological issues.

  • Short stories selection

The seventeen short stories included in Three Centuries of Spanish Short Stories: Literary Selections and Activities for the Student of Spanish have carefully been selected to introduce students to the different literary trends of nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first century Spain. In addition, these readings inspire students to not only think critically and creatively about certain topics, but they also invite them to express themselves in Spanish about a number of aspects of modern Spain. Moreover, students will most likely have a personal connection to many of the themes introduced by these short stories. The short fiction selected for this textbook was written by both internationally known and lesser-known authors. The purpose for this selection is to expose students to both the canonical and non-canonical literary production of Spain.

     Reviews

The choice of stories for this book is excellent: the stories are engaging, they reflect the broad range of narrative trends of these centuries, and they should generate much discussion.
